The EGDC Enters Deployment Phase

The EGDC Enters Deployment Phase

The European Green Digital Coalition (EGDC) is entering its Deployment Phase, following the successful delivery of science-based methodologies to measure the enabling impact of digital solutions on climate outcomes.

In Phase 1, the EGDC focused on laying the foundation of the project by developing and validating a science-based methodology to calculate the net climate impact of real-life digital solutions that contribute to Europe’s climate and sustainability objectives.

The main outcomes of the EGDC Phase I were:

    • A Net Carbon Impact Assessment Methodology (NCM), allowing for rigorous comparison of scenarios with and without ICT solutions.
    • Six sector-specific methodologies for energy, construction/buildings, smart cities, agriculture, transport, and manufacturing.
    • Real-life case studies that informed and tested the methodology, drawing on digital innovations like cloud-based energy tools, 5G-enabled manufacturing, and smart city platforms.
    • Deployment Guidelines offering sector-level recommendations for maximising climate benefits while addressing risks such as solution footprints and rebound effects.

Now, in the Deployment Phase, the EGDC is focused on accelerating the application of this methodology to real-world case studies and supporting sustainable finance to enable sustainable digital transformation in key sectors. Our objectives include:

    • Applying the NCM to quantify the climate impact of digital solutions in real-life deployments.
    • Supporting sustainable finance by equipping financial institutions with tools and guidance to fund green digital innovation.
    • Promoting NCM adoption as a global standard for measuring avoided emissions and net environmental impacts.
    • Developing the EGDC Toolbox to streamline the assessment process and provide a repository of NCM case study for wider use.

This next phase is a vital step in scaling climate-positive digitalisation across Europe.
