EUROPEAN GREEN DIGITAL COALITION

The European Green Digital Coalition (EGDC) is an initiative of companies, supported by the European Commission and the European Parliament, based on the request of the EU Council, which aims to harness the enabling emission-reducing potential of digital solutions to all other sectors.

What is the EGDC?

The European Green Digital Coalition is a group of companies committed to supporting the Green and Digital Transformation of the EU.

It was founded by 26 CEOs of ICT companies who signed a Declaration to support the Green and Digital Transformation of the EU on Digital Day 2021, with the objective of:

        1. Investing in the development and deployment of green digital solutions with significant energy and material efficiency that achieve a net positive impact in a wide range of sectors;
        2. Developing methods and tools to measure the net impact of green digital technologies on the environment and climate by joining forces with NGOs and relevant expert organisations;
        3. Co-creating, with representatives of others sectors, recommendations and guidelines for green digital transformation of these sectors that benefits environment, society and economy.

What has been achieved?

As part of Pilot Phase, the EGDC worked to define science–based methods to estimate the reduction and avoidance of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by specific ICT solutions, in the following sectors:

Transport
Agriculture
Smart cities
Smart cities
Energy/Power
Manufacturing

Science-based method to calculate the net climate impact of given solutions, complemented by six sector-specific methodologies illustrating the application of the assessment in each sector.

The Methodology helps figure out the difference between the benefits (like reduced emissions) and the costs (like emissions from making and using the technology). It is a valuable tool for understanding the environmental effects of digitalisation and offers practical advice on how to use technology sustainably.

The Case Studies offer insights into the calculation of the net carbon impact of real-life digital solutions, showcasing the practical application of the EGDC Methodology.

The deployment guidelines provide recommendations for green digital transformation in each of the six sectors, and guidance on the deployment of digital solutions to maximise their net positive impact (e.g. emission avoidance) and minimise negative impacts (solution footprint, rebound effects).

What lies ahead?

In the deployment phase, the EGDC is working to support sustainable finance for digitalisation in key sectors, contributing to the EU Green Deal’s objectives and ensuring that the environmental impacts of digital transformation are monitored and quantified, and that the overall impact on the environment is positive.

We are implementing the Net Carbon Methodology in real-world case studies across a wide range of sectors-including energy, transport, and manufacturing-and involving various types of actors, such as companies using or developing digital solutions, and smart cities. Through this approach, we aim to quantify and better understand the climate impact of ICT solutions in diverse contexts.

Are you developing or using a digital solution and want to understand its carbon footprint?

We’re actively engaging with financial stakeholders-including multilateral development banks, national development institutions, and commercial banks-to co-design practical and transparent eligibility criteria aligned with the Net Carbon Methodology.

These criteria will enable easier access to sustainable finance streams and support investment in environmentally responsible digital solutions.

Are you a financial institution interested in aligning your offerings with cutting-edge sustainability metrics?

To ensure coherence and amplify our impact, we are building partnerships with complementary European and international initiatives. This collaboration aims to harmonise efforts, foster innovation, and create synergies that reinforce the adoption and credibility of the Net Carbon Methodology on a global scale.

Are you part of an initiative with similar goals? Let’s explore how we can collaborate!

Raising awareness and promoting widespread adoption of the Net Carbon Methodology is one of our key goals. By engaging with stakeholders across industries and geographies, we aim to build a strong community of practice and support the transition to a low-carbon digital economy.

Interested in connecting with us? Join us at one of our upcoming events – online or in person – and learn how you can get involved!

We are continuously building a publicly accessible repository of Net Carbon Methodology assessments conducted across different sectors and use cases. Whether you’re exploring how others have applied the methodology or evaluating the potential carbon impact of your own digital solution, this repository offers valuable insights to inform your decision-making.

Explore our growing library of real-world case studies, and check back regularly for updates!

To support broader and more efficient adoption of the Net Carbon Methodology, we are developing an EGDC toolbox-a digital resource designed to simplify and automate the assessment process. This will empower companies and organizations to independently evaluate the climate impact of their digital technologies.

While the full toolbox is in development, why not get started with our sectoral guidelines?
